What Does “Holistic” Actually Mean to Us?

Architects are not only responsible for office design but they also nurture the harmony between the idea and its performance. Małgorzata Grzyb, Architect & Interior Designer of Interbiuro, explains why is it worth investing in such an approach to design.

Office design is a big process. It can be also stressful for companies which are laymen in this field. Can they feel that actually someone takes the full responsibility for all actions when they commission design and office realization to experts?

Of course. Interbiuro has 18 years of experience in office design and construction. We devise a particular design and perform a fit-out. Our architect is treated as a guardian of investor’s interests in this process. Thanks to a holistic approach to design, the architect – as the author of the project – nurtures the harmony between the idea and its performance. What is more, they coordinate industry projects and select products which perfectly fit the idea of the project. The great asset of our company is that we are not under any contract with producers of furniture. Therefore, we are free to choose products which perfectly fit a particular design. We are in constant contact with our client, and, more importantly, we conduct works in control with the settled budget.

Can you present us some examples of offices performed by Interbiuro basing upon the holistic approach?

When we talk about design based on the holistic approach, we can concentrate on both large and small projects. The entire offices are performed basing upon this view as well as smaller areas such as rooms for work in silence, places for cooperation and relaxation zones. The example of such holistically designed offices are: head office of Initiative Media Warsaw (in progress), Bauer Media, Omega Pfarma Poland, or Simon Kucher & Partners.

Where do you, as a designer of holistic office design, look for inspiration?

When we design, we fully concentrate not only on the architecture of interior in general but also on a single detail. Personally, I believe that the main inspiration at design of office space are nature as well as observation of life and environment in which we are living. I attempt to transfer these ideas into my projects, and then, I execute them. The example is the ceiling in the entrance hall in the showroom of Martela in Wola Center which was inspired by a ribbon, whereas the leitmotif for the reception counter in the building is a wristband. What is more, the corridor in Initiative is performed in imitation of a lane or a city passage. In such designed offices, the nature literally “enters” the interior.

Do you think that the market of the performance of office space will progress towards holistically designed areas and they will become more and more popular?

Definitely, yes. It is an absolute must, especially when we think about our work place globally, taking account of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), that is social responsibility of business, or sustainability (sustainable development). Then and only then we are able to design office which will meet the challenges of tomorrow.
