The investment related to modernization at Czyżyński roundabout came to an end. At present, only minor finishing works are being conducted in the underground part. According to the concluded contract, this part of the project was supposed to be completed by the contractor by the end of November this year but it was actually finalized one month earlier.

Modernization of Czyżyński roundabout was conducted in two stages – aboveground and underground – due to the fact that the time of expectation for an administrative decision was prolonged in the second case. Considering people who were conducting their business activity in the passage, we wanted to locate several kiosks there but eventually we obtained a consent only for five of them. The project had to be devised once again and thus the works were prolonged – explains Krzysztof Migdał, Management Board of Communal and Transport Infrastructure.

The investment concerning modernization works conducted at Czyżyński roundabout is being realized within the project titled Development of a tram line on the passage Rondo Mogilskie – Jan Paweł II Avenue – Plac Centralny along with a system of traffic control in Cracow" co-financed by the European Union from the means of Cohesion Fund within Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment. The total value of the undertaking amounts to almost 143 million zlotys. Works at development of the route Rondo Mogilskie – Plac Centralny started in February 2014. The investment allowed to e.g. modernize the line and depot infrastructure, which was adjusted to the needs of the disabled, or perform a new surface of the road as well as conduct a missing bicycle path along Mogilska Street, thanks to which all bicyclists are able to commute from the center of Cracow to the very heart of Nowa Huta.

The connection is frequently used by students, who constitute the number of ca. 200 thousand per year in Cracow. The tram line Rondo Mogilskie – Jan Paweł II Avenue – Plac Centralny has a crucial meaning for commuting of students between academic centers and universities. This connection is used by e.g. students from the Cracow University of Technology or the University of Physical Education in Cracow. Additionally, the line connects the hubs of public transport with a suburban subsystem of public transport, including e.g. a bus station in the neighborhood of Rondo Czyżynskiego – explains Krzysztof Migdał, ZIKiT.
