On March 20, 2013, Lech Wałęsa Airport in Gdansk has become a new platform for discussion on a shape of new business district in the city. The idea of creating so-called Airport City, was discussed by the airport and city of Gdansk representatives, the city hall and local business. The meeting was initiated by the marshal of Pomerania Voivodeship, Mieczyslaw Struk and the Gdansk Airport authorities. Tomasz Klosowski, the airport director, Andrzej Bojanowski, vice President, Ryszard Swilski, the member of Pomerania Voivodeship Board and the business individuals who have their offices located in the airport area.
The conclusions drawn from the meeting are clear: gathered individuals see the future and the emerging district; and, they decided to implement a new business area. Its aim is to encourage foreign and domestic investors, which will allow for further development of Tricity. As explains the Marshal of Pomerania Voivodeship - We want to make the best use of land in the immediate vicinity of the airport.
Airport City will be located at Rebiechowo in Gdansk. The airport services the international flights and has been running for 40 years. It is planned another investment like Terminal 2 expansion, which has been recently put into use. The construction of convention and office center is also planned.
The infrastructure develops rapidly in the area: in 2015 the Pomerania Metropolitan Rilway will be created, which facilitate the connection between Gdansk Wrzeszcz and Gdynia, and the airport. The Hampton Hotel by Hilton, which construction is almost finished, is located in close vicinity. The first office complex, belonging to BCB Business Park, has been running in the area. Its developer is Baltyckie Business Center, which plans to built 5 additional office buildings with a total area of 45 000 sqm, the social service center and hotel. Tricity business landscape is also supplemented by Allcon@Park.
District also gained, thanks to Euro 2012 organization, when two-line Road connecting the ring with the airport was built. Not too long ago, the renovation of the lower section of Slowacki Street has been completed. In near future, the city plans to rebuilt the sanitary sewer system.
According to world trends, Airpot City is the airport localized investment. This includes additional elements of communication infrastructure and business activity in the immediate vicinity. Projects like this have been created in cities like Brussels, Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
